IMPORT EXPORT CODE

What is import Export Code?

Import Export (IE) Code is a registration required for persons importing or exporting goods and services from India. IE Code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India. IE Codes when issued can be used by the entity throughout its existence and doesn't require any renewal or filing. Therefore, it is recommended for most organizations to obtain IE Code, irrespective of if they need it at the moment.

IE Code application must be made to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade along with the necessary supporting documents. Once, the application is submitted, DGFT will issue the IE Code for the entity in 1 - 2 working days or less. All importers who import goods are required to register Import export code and all exporters need this code to obtain the benefits of exports. IEC code holder does not require filing of any returns. IEC Code is issued for lifetime and requires no renewal. Even individuals who are proprietors can obtain the code in their name. It is not necessary to setup a business for the same.

Mandatory

Import Export Code is mandatory for all persons doing imports/exports. Without registration of IEC code import / export is not permissible.

No Return Filling

Once IEC is issued, there is no obligation of any return filing with government. IEC should be quoted only at the time of import or export of goods or services.

Online Process

Registration of IEC is online process where documents required to be submitted to DGFT authorities. Hence scan documents required for processing IEC Code.

Exporters Require IEC

All Exporters who export goods from India. The IE Code must be quoted while sending shipments. And banks require the exporters IE Code while receiving money from abroad

Quick Processing

Process of obtaining IEC code registration taken 8-10 working day. After verification of form DGFT authorities grant IEC registration number to person.

Importers Require IEC

All Importers who import goods into India require an IE Code. The IE Code must be quoted while clearing customs. Also, banks require the importers IE Code while sending money abroad.

Documents required for IEC Code

Sole Proprietorship

  • Digital photograph (3*3)
  • Copy of pan card of the proprietor
  • Copy of passport/voter id/driving license/UID
  • If the business is self-owned, then sale-deed
  • If the business is rented, then rental/lease agreement
